Diaper dermatitis (commonly called diaper rash) is an inflammation of the skin in the diaper area. It is very common in infants and young children.
Symptoms
- Red, irritated skin in the diaper area
- Mild swelling
- Tenderness or discomfort during diaper changes
- Warm or shiny skin
- In some cases, small bumps or peeling skin
Common causes
- Prolonged contact with urine or stool
- Friction from diapers
- Sensitive skin
- Diarrhea
- Introduction of new foods
- Antibiotic use
- Yeast infection (especially by Candida)
