Diaper dermatitis

Diaper dermatitis (commonly called diaper rash) is an inflammation of the skin in the diaper area. It is very common in infants and young children.

Symptoms

  • Red, irritated skin in the diaper area
  • Mild swelling
  • Tenderness or discomfort during diaper changes
  • Warm or shiny skin
  • In some cases, small bumps or peeling skin

Common causes

  • Prolonged contact with urine or stool
  • Friction from diapers
  • Sensitive skin
  • Diarrhea
  • Introduction of new foods
  • Antibiotic use
  • Yeast infection (especially by Candida)
