Keloid management focuses on controlling and reducing the overgrowth of scar tissue that forms after skin injury, such as cuts, burns, acne, surgery, or piercing. Keloids are raised, thick scars that extend beyond the original wound area and may cause itching, discomfort, or cosmetic concern.
Treatment depends on the size, location, and severity of the keloid. Common management options include steroid injections to flatten and soften the scar, silicone gel sheets or creams to reduce thickness, and pressure therapy in selected cases. Laser therapy and cryotherapy (freezing treatment) may also be used to improve appearance and symptoms.
In resistant or large keloids, surgical removal may be done, often combined with steroid injections or other therapies to reduce the chance of recurrence. Since keloids have a tendency to come back, long-term follow-up is usually needed.
