Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). It appears as small, smooth, flesh-colored or pink bumps with a characteristic central dimple. The condition is most common in children but can also affect adults. It spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact, contaminated objects, or scratching infected areas.
Symptoms
- Small, round, raised bumps on the skin
- Central dimple or indentation in the bumps
- Flesh-colored, white, or pink lesions
- Mild itching or irritation
- Clusters of bumps that may spread to nearby skin
Causes
- Infection with the molluscum contagiosum virus
- Direct contact with an infected person
- Sharing towels, clothing, or personal items
- Touching or scratching existing lesions
