Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the skin and causes intense itching and a rash. It spreads easily through close skin-to-skin contact and sometimes through contaminated clothing or bedding.
Symptoms
- Severe itching (especially at night)
- Red rashes or small bumps on the skin
- Thin, wavy lines (burrow marks) on the skin
- Sores or crusting due to scratching
- Common areas: between fingers, wrists, elbows, armpits, waist, and genitals
Causes
- Infestation by scabies mites
- Direct prolonged skin contact with an infected person
- Sharing clothing, bedding, or towels with an infected person
- Close living conditions (families, schools, hostels)
